Xi Jinping was born on June 15, 1953, in Beijing, China, to Xi Zhongxun, a revolutionary hero and senior Communist Party official, and Qi Xin. Growing up in relative privilege, Xi’s early life was upended during the Cultural Revolution when his father was purged, and Xi, at 15, was sent to rural Shaanxi in 1969 to work as a laborer. Living in a cave dwelling, he endured hardship, developing resilience and a connection to rural China that would later shape his political image.

Xi joined the Communist Party in 1974 and studied chemical engineering at Tsinghua University, graduating in 1979. He began his career in low-level government posts, including a stint as a secretary in the military, before rising through provincial leadership roles in Hebei, Fujian, and Zhejiang. Known for pragmatism and discipline, Xi gained a reputation for economic growth and anti-corruption efforts. In 2007, he was appointed to the Politburo Standing Committee, marking him as a future leader.

In 2012, Xi became General Secretary of the Communist Party and, in 2013, President of China. His leadership has centered on consolidating power, economic modernization, and asserting China’s global influence. Key initiatives include the Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013 to expand infrastructure globally, and a sweeping anti-corruption campaign that strengthened his control while targeting rivals. Xi’s policies have prioritized state-driven development, technological self-reliance, and a muscular foreign policy, including tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

In 2018, China abolished presidential term limits, allowing Xi to remain in power indefinitely. His vision of the “Chinese Dream” emphasizes national rejuvenation, blending economic prosperity with cultural pride. However, his tenure has faced criticism for tightening censorship, suppressing dissent, and policies in Xinjiang and Hong Kong. The 2022 Beijing Olympics and China’s role in global trade reflect his ambition to elevate China’s stature.

As of October 22, 2025, at age 72, Xi remains China’s paramount leader, steering the country through economic challenges, geopolitical rivalries, and domestic pressures. Married to Peng Liyuan, a renowned folk singer, since 1987, he has one daughter, Xi Mingze. His austere public persona, rooted in his rural years and tempered by political lineage, continues to define his rule as he balances China’s rise with internal stability.
