La Palma volcano opens new fissure and threatens more evacuations

Lava continued to spew out of a new fissure in the Cumbre Vieja volcano as part of an ongoing eruption on the island of La Palma, as footage filmed on Sunday shows.

The new fissure opened during the early hours of Saturday, on the north-eastern slope of the volcano.

According to local reports, large clouds of smoke rose into the air from the new centre, emitting incandescent pyroclasts, which caused a spike in seismicity on the island.

As a result, the island recorded more than 50 tremors with magnitudes of 3.5 on the Richter scale, according to the IGN (National Geographic Institute).

Authorities are warning of the danger if the lava emanating from the new fissure overflows the existing channels and affects a new surface, prompting more evacuations.

The eruption of the volcano has been taking place since September 19.
