Lava and ash spewed by volcano eruption in Canary Islands

Lava, ash and columns of smoke were seen spewing from the hills of La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands, as a volcano erupted on Sunday.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano located in the Santa Cruz de La Palma province on the archipelago had already been under close surveillance for days by local authorities due to increased seismic activity.

The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed that he would visit the area, cancelling previous plans to go to New York for a United Nations general assembly.

The Canary Islands last experienced a volcanic eruption underwater in 2011 on the El Hierro island.
