US President Joe Biden is delivering remarks on the administration’s response to Tropical Storm Henri that hit the northeast of the country over the weekend and on the evacuation of American citizens, special immigrant visa applicants and vulnerable Afghans from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover on Sunday, August 22 in Washington, DC.
Biden has previously said that he intended to evacuate all US forces out of Afghanistan by the end of August, but thousands of US citizens are still stranded in the country.
The administration has pledged to evacuate all remaining US citizens, along with up to 65,000 Afghans who were in service for the US government, such as translators for the military.
More than 5,000 US troops are on the ground helping with the operations at Kabul’s airport. Thousands of people have tried to flee Afghanistan since August 15 when Kabul fell to the Taliban, amid fears of reprisals and a return to authoritarian rule.
