Shelves left empty in Houston Walmart as energy crisis continues

Shelves were completely empty at a local area Walmart in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, as blackouts continue to affect nearly 500,000 homes in the state amid freezing weather.

Not a single item of food could be found on the shelves and in the refrigerated section of the Walmart in southwest Sam Houston Parkway, as residents scrambled to buy essential supplies amid the ongoing crisis.

Some 2.5 million homes experienced blackouts in recent days, as a winter storm brought freezing temperatures to the state, causing pipes to burst, flooding homes and leaving residents shivering and in the dark.

As of Thursday, power had been restored to two million homes, but nearly 500,000 remained affected by the outages.
