Merchants in Veracruz have begun offering an alternative ‘solution’ against COVID-19, a firecracker called ‘Destroy the Coronavirus,’ to symbolically eliminate the virus.
Customers could be seen buying the fireworks at a shop in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz on Friday, while an example of its multi-coloured explosion was also seen.
Shopkeeper Jan Carlo Perez explained that, although there are people who see the firecracker as something negative, the “Mexican has that humor, to try to carry all the situation that we are taking all this 2020, with the best expectation we can have.”
Llaneli Jimenez, a customer who bought the ‘Destroy the Coronavirus’ firecracker, said she thought it was an ‘interesting rocket.’ According to reports, the price of the firecracker is around 50 Mexican pesos (around €2/$2.42) and is suitable for children, according to Carlo Perez.
On Friday, the Mexican government announced that it had authorised the use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. To date, Mexico has recorded 1,229,379 cases of COVID-19 and 113,019 related deaths, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
