Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej dies of coronavirus at 90

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej, has died after contracting coronavirus, it was announced on Friday. Irinej had been in a military hospital in Belgrade since being diagnosed with coronavirus on November 4. Three days prior, he led the funeral of Bishop Amfilohije Radovic, who died of COVID-related complications in Montenegro where he reportedly got infected. The mass was attended by thousands of people who were reportedly not exercising social distancing rules. Irinej became the 45th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2010.
