Pompeo meets President Zurabishvili, PM Gakharia in Tbilisi

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Georgian President Solome Zurabishvili and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia as part of his visit to Tbilisi on Wednesday. At his meeting with Gakharia, Pompeo said the US recognised “the pain and difficulty connected to the (Russian) occupation of your country.” He added that Washington wanted to continue supporting Georgia in building its institutions to ensure “free and fair elections and all of the things that come with robust debate and democracy.” Pompeo’s visit to Tbilisi comes amid post-election turmoil in Georgia that has seen thousands of people take to the streets to call for fresh general elections after allegations of fraud during the poll on October 31.
