Dortmund to dismantle ‘world’s largest’ Christmas tree due to COVID threat

Construction works on what is considered to be the world’s largest Christmas tree in the German city of Dortmund appear to have stopped, as filmed on Thursday. It comes as the authorities announced on Tuesday that the structure will be dismantled due to concerns over COVID-19. With the country going through the second, although partial, lockdown the traditional Christmas tree came to be seen as a large magnet for crowds. The latest COVID restrictions which began on Monday include limiting bars and restaurants to takeaway and pick-up only, as well as closing entertainment venues. The city spent 300,000 euros ($354,800) on the structure which was set to consist of 1,600 tree branches. (ruptly.tv)
